Venture inland on your next Costa del Sol Holiday

We are lucky to have miles of beautiful beaches and wonderful coastline here on the Costa del Sol. This is the focus for most holiday makers who visit the Malaga area, but there’s a lot of wonderful places to explore inland from the coast which might surprise you.

There are two options you can choose from, stay in a holiday rental close to the beach and hire a car to explore the inland areas, or rent a property close to one of the beautiful white villages. We have a number of excellent properties on the beach and close to the villages of Benahavis (a gourmet paradise), Casares (picturesque and traditional) and Mijas Pueblo (close to Fuengirola) and can advise you where would suit you best.

Wherever you stay, don’t miss Malaga province’s beautiful countryside, it’s so close to the coastal resorts, but feels a world away. There are wonderful parks, striking scenery, hiking and mountain biking routes and great opportunities to bird spot and encounter unique flora and fauna. The white villages for which the region is rightly famous are wonderfully picturesque and many retain a very traditional feel. Casares is one of our favourites, as it combines a village centre which hasn’t changed for hundreds of years, with beautiful countryside and views, as well as modern additions such as excellent restaurants and even a zipline.

Ronda is a great place for a day trip. The breath-taking gorge and incredible bridge is iconic, but it has a lot more to offer as well. There are ancient city walls which you can explore, Roman and Moorish architecture and ruins, one of the first bullrings in the area with an interesting museum and a brilliant wine route. The Ronda region is growing in regard as a wine producing region and you can visit bodegas for tours and tastings while you’re there. Find out more about wine tourism on the Costa del Sol

Close to Marbella are the villages of Ojen and Istan and you can easily visit both in one day. Ojen is small and traditional, with small olive oil and wine museums and some interesting caves, which you can explore. It explodes with music at the end of June for a two-day independent music festival, but the rest of the year has a charming sleepy feel. Istan is within the Sierra de las Nieves natural park and is stunning, with the two rivers Rio Verde and Rio Molinos flowing either side. It’s a great place to walk, with ten routes which take you through the stunning countryside. Make sure you take a camera and stop at the viewpoints or Miradors for views of the rivers, countryside and reservoir.
