The best places to go out on the Costa del Sol this summer

If you’re packing your bags, jetting over to the Costa del Sol this summer and are looking to dance the night away, you are spoilt for choice! Andalucia is well known for throwing epic fiestas and enjoying the good life, well into the early hours of the morning. Plus hotspots like Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella and Puerto Banus all have incredible nightlife year round.

If you’re dreaming about a fun holiday in the sun but haven’t sorted out your accommodation yet, contact us for holiday rental properties with last minute availability.

Here’s our guide for where to head out and enjoy a party on the Costa del Sol this summer.

Beach Clubs

There is a huge range of Beach Clubs to choose from along the Costa del Sol, from relaxed affairs to party hubs and everything in between. Most have special nights and bring in DJs, so you can soak up the sun, enjoy cocktails and listen to fantastic music from your sun lounger. Check out Nikki Beach in Elviria, La Sala by the Sea or Ocean Club in Marbella if you want to party, or a wide range of others for a more relaxed but very cool place to hang out this summer.

Starlite

The biggest concert series of the year is the Starlite music festival in Marbella. Starting on the 5th of July and running until the 23rd of August there is an amazing line up of Spanish and international artists including The Beach Boys, Kool & The Gang, Jamie Cullum, Sting, John Legend, Luis Fonsi, David Bisbal, Jason Derulo and many more. There are also DJs, groups and events around the autdiorium where there are great bars and food stalls to enjoy. Definitely one of the biggest parties in town.

Puente Romano

Marbella’s Puente Romano is a fantastic place to eat, drink and party. There are loads of great restaurants around its central courtyard and a number of funky bars and a nightclub. The square transforms itself into a cool bar on summer nights and there are lots of excellent events during the summer season. The Puente Romano tennis club is also welcoming The Jacksons to perform a concert on the 8th of August.

Puerto Banus

Puerto Banus is well known for its huge concentration of bars, restaurants and nightclubs, so is a mecca for party animals throughout the year. Get your glad rags on and hit the town, starting off with a walk through the port and ending in one of the superclubs on the square. Another very popular option is La Sala, just up the road in Nueva Andalucia, where you can eat, drink and dance the night away.

Tapas Tour

A favourite past time of the Spanish on long, hot summer evenings is to do a tapas bar crawl, where the streets are buzzing from 9pm to midnight. Find a lively area with lots of restaurants and have a drink and try a different dish in each, soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the delicious food.

Ferias

Young and old come out to party for the summer ferias in Andalucia, and you should definitely join in the fun! Head to your local tourist office and find out what ferias are happening near you during your stay and go ahead and join in.

Holidaying on the Costa del Sol like a local

People often ask us how to have a true Spanish experience on their next holiday. Staying in a holiday rental is a good start, as you have a home-from-home and can cook, relax and enjoy the amazing weather in comfort from day one. We will also supply you with an information pack with recommendations of the best places to visit near your holiday rental, as well as supermarkets, banks and practicalities of living in Spain, so you feel right at home.

Here are a few tips from our holiday rental advisors, who all live and work here on the Costa del Sol, on how to really holiday like a local this year.

Enjoy the perfect beach day – Spanish summers are all about the beach and Spanish families typically camp out all day long, bringing amazing amounts of supplies to make their stay comfortable. After a lazy breakfast in your holiday rental, gather your towels, snacks, cooler, sun cream, beach chairs and parasols and set up to be there until the sun goes down. Check out our tips for visiting the beach for more info.

Join the crowds at an event – The Spanish love to do everything en masse and so heading along to an event is a great way to feel at home and join in the fun. Whether you choose a traditional feria or a concert you will have an amazing experience and see how the Spanish party!

Hire a car or choose your location wisely – Public transport options are limited here on the Costa del Sol. If you want to explore the area, visit the nearby tourist attractions and fill your time with activities, you don’t want to be stuck waiting for buses. Hiring a car is a good option, which will make you feel like a local and give you total freedom. However, if you’d rather not hire a car, then base yourself in one of the towns along the train line from Malaga to Fuengirola. This makes travelling a lot easier, and the towns themselves have plenty to see and do on foot.

Make the most of the amazing Spanish foodThe Costa del Sol is a foodie’s paradise, with a huge range of wonderful restaurants and tapas bars. The produce is fresh, delicious and excellent value and new gourmet markets are springing up along the coast. For the full experience, make sure you go to a chiringuito or beach restaurant for lunch and enjoy fresh seafood grilled over a wood fire (espeto), a selection of fried fish such as boquerones al limon, calamares and cazon en adobo and try a paella. Lunches here are long and leisurely and paellas normally take about 45 minutes to come, so snack on the fish and salad first and only order a paella for 2 people, even in a group of 5 or more, so you can all enjoy a selection. Try a tapas crawl one evening, moving between places and ordering a few dishes to share in each. This will allow you to sample lots of amazing food and find your favourite dishes and places for the rest of the holiday.

We hope you have an amazing holiday here on the Costa del Sol and that these tips help you have an authentic experience that you’ll never forget. Browse our collection of holiday homes and book online. There are still a few properties available for this summer, but they are booking up fast. Please contact us with your requirements for a last minute summer break and we can send you a shortlist.

Shopping on the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is a great place to shop, with everything from designer brands to high street favourites and bustling markets where you can pick up a bargain.

There are two big shopping centres which are favourites for residents and holiday makers alike as there’s parking, lots of shops in one place and also restaurants and cafes where you can take a break.

If you’re holidaying in Fuengirola then your best option is the Miramar shopping centre. Conveniently located close to the centre of town and connected by buses and trains, Miramar is one of the largest shopping centres on the Costa del Sol with lots of great shops, a cinema, restaurants and supermarket. The shops are open from 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday. Outside of the peak season it is closed on Sundays, but open most Sundays in July and August. There’s a kids club open from 5-8pm Wednesday to Friday and 12-2 and 5-9 on weekends and holidays so the little ones can be entertained. The cinema shows films in English (look for VO screenings). Check out the Miramar shopping centre website

If you’re holidaying in Marbella then La Cañada shopping centre is the best one for you.  Located a bit further away from the centre of town, you need to take a bus or car to get there, but it’s only a five minute drive from the centre. It is a big shopping centre, with loads of great shops, restaurants, a supermarket and cinema. The cinema doesn’t show many films in English, so isn’t as popular with the tourists, but the shopping is great! The highlight is the women’s clothes shops, which offers loads of options, so you’re almost guaranteed to find what you’re looking for.

Another great option for holiday makers in and around Marbella is Puerto Banus. It has a massive El Corte Ingles department store, a smaller shopping centre just opposite and a market in the main square during the summer. Down in the marina, you’ll find a large selection of designer brands too, so there’s something to suit everyone.

Last but not least, head to the massive weekly markets which are held all along the coast and you can pick up everything from clothes, jewellery, bags and accessories to fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs and ceramics. These are great fun and always busy, just make sure you get there early, as by 2pm everything is closing. Here’s a good guide to the Costa del Sol markets.

We help our clients make the most of their Costa del Sol holidays, with excellent holiday rental properties and local knowledge and information. Please get in touch with us for advice on where to stay, or the best places to visit during your holiday. We can advise you on the best locations for you and help with everything from car hire to green fees. We look forward to hearing from you!

Tips for getting ready for your Costa del Sol holiday

Costa del Sol Holiday Tips

It’s great the see the UK experiencing some early summer weather and everyone enjoying being outside, BBQs, days at the park and hitting the beer garden. The UK in the sunshine is amazing, but as we know it can’t last, so if the recent warm sunny weather has reminded you how great it is to be in the sunshine and left you wanting more, it’s time to book and get ready for your summer holiday on the Costa del Sol.

They don’t call it the sunshine coast for nothing, with around 300 days of sunshine per year and rain almost unheard of between June and September. The temperatures have now settled into the mid to high twenties, with a night time temperature of around 16, plenty of bright sunshine and blue skies.  This is the perfect place to hit the beach, let the kids play in the pool or at the local playground, dine alfresco and feel the sun on your skin.

But before you go, we have a few tips to help you get ready –

  1. Invest in a superlight case – If you want to save money and just take hand luggage, a really light case is your best friend and is usually made in the correct dimensions to fit in the overhead compartment no problem. Travelling with hand luggage can save you time as well as money, as you can get out of the airport and start your holiday even quicker!
  2. Put together a capsule summer wardrobe – You don’t need to take tons of stuff, especially if you’re staying in a holiday rental property, as you can do a wash while you’re there and they have beach towels and lots of the essentials for you to use. Check with the owners what they have, so you’re not carrying more than you need. You’ll need swimming things, some shorts, dresses, or cover-ups for the beach, a few pairs of comfortable shoes and some things for the evening. The key is loose fitting, comfortable clothes, not forgetting that the evenings can feel chilly after a very hot day, so bring a cardie, or a pashmina to make sure you’re prepared. We also recommend 100% UV sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and head from the sun.
  3. Plan Ahead – Enjoy researching what you’re going to do during your trip and as well as getting excited, you can also save money by buying tickets online in advance for attractions and waterparks. Look to see if there are any special events during your stay such as ferias or concerts, so you don’t miss out! There are lots of great websites which can help you plan from home, including the newly launched Things2DoMarbella which features the latest technology to help you enjoy your holiday.
  4. Look after your skin – The sun can be quite punishing on your skin, so before you go, make sure you exfoliate and moisturise so your skin is in great condition. When you arrive, start with a high factor sun cream, gradually working down to a lower factor, but never underestimating the power of the Spanish sun – red is so not a good look!
  5. Get ready for the beach – Here is Spain we are in the middle of operation bikini – fitness and healthy eating to get beach ready. If you want to feel more comfortable on the beach, give yourself plenty of time to start a healthy eating and exercise routine. Also, remember that your feet will be out of boots and into sandals so give yourself a pedicure so they are hot to trot.

Easter week on the Costa del Sol

We love this time of year in Southern Spain! The towns and beaches receive a spring clean after the winter, and the days start to get considerably warmer! Easter is an important time in the Spanish calendar and is hugely celebrated by the whole country.  If you are lucky enough to be on holiday here during this time, you will be sure to find plenty of things to see and do!

The history of Easter in Spain

Holy week (Semana Santa) is an event rich with culture, celebrations and fantastic processions which have become a big part of Spanish tradition since the 16th century.  You may have already seen various groups of people (nazarenos) wearing tall pointed hats and robes with faces covered; this is all part of the Easter tradition in Spain and has a symbolic meaning. The face cover represents shame for the sins committed throughout the year and mourning for Jesus Christ. The pointed hats are said to bring the penitence closer to heaven and are removed on Easter Sunday to mark a victorious end to mourning.

From every Catholic Church, a local brother hood “costaleros” carries a large antique throne, traditionally to the cathedral then back to the church, with some of them weighing as much as 5,000 kilos! The pain and suffering coursed by carrying such a heavy weight is actually a symbol of what Jesus experienced carrying the cross. In fact, all of the parades from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday depict the story about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is a great reminder of why we celebrate this time. Every part of Spain has different rituals to celebrate the Easter story, so where ever you go you are sure to have fun and learn something new!

Here are some great events happening over Easter in the Marbella area;

  • Processions – One of the biggest Easter processions in Spain is held in Malaga, so definitely worth a visit if you’re here on holiday. It’s worth keeping in mind though that parades will be cancelled if it rains! You can see the timetable for the local Marbella processions here.
  • Easter egg hunts – There are some great Easter egg hunts planned on the Costa del Sol for the kids to enjoy this year, you can find out when and where they are held on websites like MarbellaFamilyFun.com. If the weather isn’t brilliant though, you could always have your own Easter egg hunt at your holiday home! You can find everything you need including all your favourite chocolate eggs at the local supermarkets such as Iceland and Supersol.
  • Kids activity days – The art camp at the Picasso Museum in Malaga and the multisports club in Nueva Andalucia are both good for being creative and burning off some energy! For younger children the Galaxia Play centre is holding a fun Easter party with loads of activities and a special visit from the Easter bunny!
  • Round of golf – While the kids are being entertained, why not enjoy the start of warmer weather with a spot of golf! There are plenty of courses to choose from for people of all levels.
  • Easter boat fair in Puerto Banus – This very popular event is held in the famous Puerto Banus Marina and makes a great day out for yacht lovers.
