A little bit about the area and attractions near this rental Villa in Marbella
According to records in 921 Abderraman III started a battle with the Mozarabs (Christians who lived on the lands of the Moslems) & Muladís of Malaga to stop a rebellion. One of these battles took place in front of the castle walls and was led by Omar Ibn Hafsun and the army of the Omeyas of Cordoba. Abderraman took Ojen and its´church was converted into a mosque.
Following the village's capture by the Catholic Monarchs in 1485 one hundred Moors (Moslem converts to Christianity) and four Christians remained, all of whom were devoted to agricultural tasks. However, by the mid-16th century, the Moors had grown tired of the high taxes which they were made to pay and joined the Istan Moors in a rebellion and after killing neighbours and setting fire to the church fled to nearby mountains. The war ended in 1570, and Ojén was repopulated by Old Christians.
Ojén's history is rich and extensive, and the village is famous for its production of aguardiente, an anise liqueur that became extremely popular in 19th century.
Today this beautiful white-washed village has become a favourite with tourists looking for the traditional Spanish experience as it remains largely untouched even though it is located so closely to Marbella. You can wander through the cobbled streets and relax in the plazas with a drink or dine out in the superb restaurants. The nearby El Refugio de Juanar in Serrania de Ronda is still very much a hunting reserve where ibex, wildcats and eagles live. It is also a favourite with ramblers and hikers who come for the mountain air and the panoramic views of Marbella and the coast 1000 metres below.
