Visiting Fuengirola in 2019

Fuengirola is a wonderful town to take a holiday. It has miles of Blue Flag beaches, a lovely marina, a reputation for excellent restaurants, a vibrant nightlife and great shopping. Over the past few years, it has also established a fantastic event calendar, with outstanding events which are a brilliant focus for a trip.

Here are just a few dates for your diary, to help you plan your Fuengirola holiday this year:

30th April-5th May – Feria de los Pueblos

Highly recommended for foodies and those interested in learning more about different countries through their cuisine, music and culture, the Feria de los Pueblos is a real feast for the senses. Held in the massive fairground area in Fuengirola, this food fair is a celebration of the many different nationalities that call Fuengirola home. There are around 35 stands, each representing a country or region, and sharing their iconic dishes with the crowds. You can see the country’s national dress, sample some of their drinks, listen to their music and join in with typical dances. You really can travel the world at this food festival!

Marenostrum Festival

This music festival has been running for many years and brings some fabulous artists to perform in the castle park in Fuengirola. There are many more acts to be announced, but here are a few you won’t want to miss.

4th May – Bob Dylan and his band perform

14th and 15th June – Rock the Coast – a two day festival for rock fans, featuring German rock legends Scorpions and Europe, with many more to still be announced

3rd July – Rod Stewart

October 6th – 12th – Fuengirola Feria

One of the last big parties of the year, Fuengirola Feria is at a great time if you’re looking for cheaper accommodation and flights, and cooler temperatures. One week of fun, flamenco, food and fairground rides, the feria is a great time to see Fuengirola come to life.

If you like the sound of these events, but want to learn more about the town, then read our Fuengirola guide and browse our selection of Fuengirola holiday rentals.

We have a wide range of beachside properties close to the centre of the action, like this two bedroom apartment close to Castillo Sohail, which is just a short walk of the beach and the concert venue. To be even closer to the centre of town and just two streets back from the beach, this one bedroom Fuengirola apartment is perfect.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us to enquire about the right holiday rental properties for you and where in or around Fuengirola would best suit you. We look forward to hearing from you!

Visit Marbella this October for film, fashion and culture

Costa del Sol Events - Autumn 2016

There is lots going on in Marbella this October and it’s a perfect time for an autumn short break. The weather has been hotter at the end of September than in August and it’s looking set to last well into October, with bright sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20s throughout the month.

There are two big events this month – The Marbella Fashion Week is taking place on the 4th to the 7th of October and the Marbella International Film Festival is from the 10th to the 14th. They overlap, so you can combine both great events into a week’s holiday. Over that same period are some excellent art exhibitions at galleries around Marbella, so you can have a wonderful cultural vacation and some sunshine too.

Here are the key things you need to know about these great events –

Marbella Fashion Week

From the 4th to the 7th of October, national and international designers will be showcasing their 2019 spring/summer collections at the Hotel Gran Melía Don Pepe Hotel right in the heart of Marbella. On the 5th and 6th of October at 7pm there are two wonderful shows where you can enjoy fine fashion and a fantastic atmosphere amongst Marbella’s fashionistas.

Marbella Film Festival

Now in its 13th year the Marbella Film Festival screens short films, documentaries and international feature films at the Teatro Goya in Puerto Banus. They also have workshops and talks for budding filmmakers to take part in. This year it is from the 10th to the 14th of October, with 6 films being shown per day between 11th and 13th of October. Check out the screening and events program and choose what you want to see. You can buy tickets for the screenings online from the Teatro Goya website and they are 6€ each.

Marbella Art Exhibitions in October

There are a number of art galleries in Marbella, and the exhibitions can be found on the Marbella Azul events calendar. At the Yusto Giner Gallery the artist Olam Haba is exhibiting until the 18th of October. The excellent Museo Ralli has an exhibition of 32 works by the Chilean artist Roberto Matta and another featuring artworks from the group of Argentinian artists which were part of the Spartacus Movement.

Marbella holiday rentals

We have a number of excellent Marbella holiday rental properties available to be your home from home while you enjoy these excellent events. One of our favourites is this stunning apartment in central Marbella, which is just 650 metres from the beach. The location is perfect, in the Jardines de Principe complex and unlike many properties in Marbella, this has underground parking, as well as a great communal pool. The apartment has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It is stylish, spacious, light and airy and would make a perfect base for an autumn getaway.

Starlite announces acts for 2018

Despite the uncertainty about Starlite’s future in Marbella last year it seems like the organisers and the Town Hall have come to an agreement and this great music festival will take place this year. This is great news for the holiday makers who want to combine a sunshine and beach holiday with seeing some amazing acts live in concert. Today we’re answering your questions about Starlite and live music on the Costa del Sol to help you plan your next trip. What is Starlite? Starlite is a very popular music festival which takes place in a spectacular location just outside Marbella’s centre in July and August. Why is it so popular? Starlite offers a great combination of concerts with big names, live music sessions, gastronomy and bars. You can go up to Starlite for a drink or a bite to eat even when there isn’t a concert and they have added in live music sessions outside the main auditorium to offer cheaper tickets with an excellent atmosphere and some great performers. There will also be DJ sessions every night, which will be a great addition to your holiday this year. Who is playing this year? Lots of fantastic acts have been announced already, with many more to come over the coming months. We’re very excited that we can see the legendary Sting on the 19th of July, as his live performances are always wonderful. Il Divo will also be performing in July, bringing their “classical crossover” style to Marbella on the 28th of July. Fans of Spanish music and dance shouldn’t miss David Bisbal on the 20th of July and extraordinary dancer Sara Baras who will be performing on the 11th of August. James Blunt is also performing at Starlite, taking to the stage on the 3rd of August, as part of his Afterlove Tour. How can you get tickets? Tickets can be bought online here and you can already secure your tickets for all the artists that have been announced and also book tables for the DJ sessions. As there are lots more artists and events to be announced, sign up for the newsletter on the website so you can get all the updates http://starlitemarbella.com/en/ Where should I stay? Marbella, Nueva Andalucia and San Pedro are three wonderful holiday destinations which are within an easy cab ride of Starlite. The map isn’t giving me results again, the Marbella and Nueva Andalucia properties give a 404 error and when I click the links on the location pages they don’t give me any properties. FYI Where else can I see live music this year? We are lucky to be able to have a lot of excellent live music in bars, restaurants and festivals here on the Costa del Sol. However, they can be late to be announced, so as you plan your trip keep your eyes peeled! Fuengirola’s Sohail Castle and the Puente Romano Tennis Club always do great concerts and the ferias through the summer are wonderful if you like flamenco and Spanish pop. Check the website for concert promoter Crazy Music Productions and the event sections of MyGuideMarbella and Marbella Azul for what’s happening during your stay. Watch Davis Cup Tennis in Marbella

Watch Davis Cup Tennis in Marbella

Marbella has been chosen to host the Davis Cup World Group matches between Great Britain and Spain from the 2nd to the 4th of February 2018. This means that some of the UK and Spain’s best players will be competing on the courts at the Puente Romano tennis club over three days. There will be singles and doubles games over five “rubbers”, with the winning team needing to win three or more of the five games.

This is the first time since 2013 that Spain has hosted a Davis Cup tie and the matchup between Great Britain and Spain hasn’t been seen since the 1980s. The UK has been seeded third in the World Group, but Spain are fearsome opponents, having won the title four times. Spain boasts an excellent pool of quality players to choose from, including world number one Rafael Nadal. With Andy Murray suffering a hip injury at Wimbledon, it remains to be seen whether he will be fit to play in the team.  However, this year both teams got knocked out in the quarter finals, so they have a point to prove.

Marbella was competing against other destinations for this great sporting event, but the great clay court at the Puente Romano, the lovely climate in the south of Spain and good transport links made it the winning choice. It will be very popular with holiday makers too for a bit of winter sun, golf, great restaurants and of course some great holiday rentals!

Davis Cup ties are always very popular with spectators, so there have been recommendations to extend the Puente Romano grandstands to accommodate around 9,000 fans. British Tennis team members will get a priority ticket sale for their allocation and then there will be a general sale for the remaining tickets. Look out for tickets going on sale soon!

The Davis Cup will be played on Marbella’s Golden Mile, between Marbella centre and Puerto Banus. If you’re looking for a holiday rental property to stay in so you can watch the match, we’d recommend Marbella if you want a town with plenty of life and amenities, Nueva Andalucia if you’d like to combine tennis with a few rounds of golf and Puerto Banus if you want designer shops and a taste of luxurious lifestyle. We have a great selection of apartments and villas between Marbella and San Pedro, all within easy reach of Puente Romano’s tennis club. Although it is out of high season, there will be a lot of players, coaches and spectators travelling to the area for the matches, so we expect demand to be high. Book as soon as you have secured your ticket to avoid disappointment.

If you don’t manage to get a ticket, Marbella is a great destination for tennis players and fans all year round, with great tennis clubs and courts on many of the area’s urbanisations and included in the grounds of many luxury holiday homes. It is home to tennis legend Manolo Santana’s club, where you can bump into the great man himself, take a lesson, or join a tournament. There are also great Town Hall run tennis courts in many of the public parks, so pack your racquet and find yourself a court near you on your next holiday.

Another date for your diary should be the Senior Masters Tournament, which takes place each September, also at the Puente Romano. This is a great opportunity to see some of the legends of the game. Players change regularly of course, but this year we got to see John McEnroe, Yannick Noah, Pat Cash and Carlos Moya who won the tournament.  It’s always a great event and is an excellent excuse for an autumn getaway. Get to know Marbella on foot

Get to know Marbella on foot

Marbella and Puerto Banus are well known for their luxurious lifestyles and fast cars, but in fact, one of the best ways to explore is on foot. They are small towns, connected by a stunning seaside promenade, with parks and pretty streets, which are perfect for walking. Exploring on foot allows you to take your time, find hidden gems and not worry about parking or traffic.  Here are our suggestions of a few great walks, hikes and activities for everyone who enjoys walking and is coming on holiday to Marbella.

Suggested walks around Marbella

If you like to walk, then head down to the seafront promenade first – it’s the best place for a stroll and stretches for miles. A nice walk is from Marbella to Puerto Banus, to visit the stunning marina and explore the great shops. It is just under 7 kilometres and takes about an hour and a half, with lots of nice places to stop for a drink along the way. You can walk back of course, but a lovely way to return is to take the catamaran ferry, which takes you on a pretty 30 minute journey and returns you to Marbella marina. The ferry is called Fly Blue and tickets are 8.50€ one way for adults and 5€ for children.  They run from Banus on the hour from 11 to 7pm find out more

Once you’ve explored the seafront promenade, the Old Town is a wonderful place to go next. The winding streets and pretty squares are heaven for pedestrians and you can browse the little shops and art galleries and pop into the great coffee shops and bars for a drink or a bite to eat, as well as exploring the chapels, churches and old town walls.

To take in a bit more of the town and see its green side, try the walking route called A Walk through Marbella’s Biodiversity. Put together by the Marbella Town Hall, it takes you through the most emblematic public spaces and charming locations around Marbella and highlights the plants and animals to be found in the area. It is a circular 5km route, which starts from the Paseo de la Alameda right in the centre of Marbella, opposite the Old Town, and goes from there down to the sea. There is an audio guide in English and a map here. The English is a little strange on the website, but it’s a lovely walk.

Hiking in Marbella

If you still want more, then hikes off into the stunning countryside around Marbella are amazing and really give you a different sense of the area. There are a number of great routes from the new cemetery near to La Cañada shopping centre, which takes you up to Juanar. Marbella – Juanar route

There is another lovely route from the charming Nagueles park in Sierra Blanca, up the old Istan track, which is a 45 minute hike through some stunning scenery. It is probably best to drive up to the starting points for these walks, as there is normally good parking and you can enjoy the walk more heading straight into the countryside.

The most ambitious hike in the Marbella area is to climb the iconic La Concha, a mountain which rises 1,200 meters behind the town and creates its envious microclimate. It is possible to climb 8km up the mountain, from the stunning natural park Juanar to the top. This is a serious climb, which will take around 6 hours up and back, so make sure you leave early enough, bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a mobile phone and wear good footwear. Here is a good guide to hiking La Concha from Marbella Family Fun.

Marbella 4Days Walking

You can make walking central to your holiday and explore the best routes by joining in with Marbella 4Days Walking, an organised walking event which consists of 20km or 30km daily walks starting from the Marbella Port and exploring different areas of the town. There is a great atmosphere, well marked, interesting routes, and entertainment for walkers at the Port and also in Marbella in the evenings. You can do all four days, or just take part in one or two and it costs 13.50€ to take part in one day, 27€ for 2 days, 40€ for 3 days and 45€ to do all 5 days. This year the event is taking place from the 12th to the 15th of October and there are already over 1,000 people signed up to participate. Find out more

We have a range of great holiday rentals in Marbella so you have a home from home to rest, relax and enjoy your holiday. If you want to be centrally located to enjoy all the great walks above, an excellent choice is this one bedroom apartment which is just 50m from the paseo.  If you need a bit more space, this great three bedroom apartment in Jardines de Principe is still walking distance to the beach and within easy reach of the town and the hikes from Nagueles park.

Please ask us if you want to be in a certain area and we can help you to find the perfect holiday rental.

The Best Costa del Sol Ferias in 2017

Costa del Sol Ferias 2017

Whenever you visit the Costa del Sol during the summer season there’s usually a feria taking place that you can enjoy. These ferias are week-long celebrations which each town and village has to celebrate their patron saint, or a significant date and are a great excuse to party! For the whole week there are day time and night time activities involving loud music, flamenco, great food and free flowing drinks and an amazing party atmosphere. It’s a chance to see the Spanish spirit at its best, so seek one out when you visit. Here’s a great list of all the Costa del Sol ferias, so you can look at where the nearest one is to you.

If you want to time your visit to fit with the best of these celebrations, here are three highlights for you.

Marbella Feria 6-12th June – Marbella’s feria is one of the first one of the season, taking place in the first week of June. The feria begins on the 6th with an amazing firework display which you can enjoy from one of the bars in Marbella’s port. Then the day fair opens, which takes place centrally at the Paseo de la Alameda, the pedestrianised area running from the main road by the Old Town, down to the seafront promenade. This is a new development from last year and really makes for a great atmosphere. From 1pm to 8pm, there’s stalls selling great food and drinks and playing music, dance performances and a party atmosphere. For the evening, there is a fair by the La Cañada shopping centre, where you can enjoy the rides and there’s more music, food and drinks to enjoy. It’s a wonderful party.

San Juan Sabinillas 23rd June – The festival of San Juan celebrates the longest day and is marked with the burning of bonfires on beaches all over the Costa del Sol. It is always a great party lasting until the early hours of the following morning and you can spend it at one of the beach restaurants, beach clubs, or just do your own thing at the nearest beach to your holiday rental. The most spectacular San Juan celebration is held in the seaside town of Sabinillas, between Estepona and Sotogrande. A local artist constructs an incredible sculpture come bonfire, there is live music and a fantastic firework display at midnight where people dip their feet into the sea to purify and ask for wishes to be granted. Thousands flock to the Sabinillas beach for this party and parking can be tricky, so you’re best to base yourself nearby if you want to make the most of this celebration. This two bedroom apartment in Sabinillas is right on the beach, in a lovely complex with pools, playgrounds and tennis courts. It is modern and stylish, with a fantastic terrace and is an easy walk to all the celebrations.

Malaga Feria 12-19 August – The biggest feria of them all is the Malaga Feria in August, which is legendary across Andalucia, with over 100 free performances around the city, music and dancing and activities taking place in all the businesses from art galleries to bars during the days of the feria. There is a massive feria ground for the evening festivities including a fair, food, drink, dancing and lots of music. Malaga is absolutely packed during the feria and is pretty hectic, so we’d recommend you base yourself just outside, where you can take the train and bus to get in, but can also get away from it all. This 2 bedroom apartment in Torremolinos is a good choice, as it’s in a great location within an easy walk of the main road and the sea front and everything that Torremolinos has to offer, but is also a very short train ride from Malaga and an affordable taxi away from all the action at the feria.

We hope you can come to the Costa del Sol this year and experience all the fun of an Andalucian feria, it’s mad, noisy and unforgettable! Let us help you to find the perfect holiday rental property and advise you when and where to go for the perfect summer holiday this year.

Costa del Sol concerts summer 2017

Costa del Sol concerts summer 2017

Spring is in the air and after a hot and sunny Easter, excitement is building about the summer season. Live music is a regular feature of summer on the Costa del Sol, with Beach Clubs, restaurants and bars all adding to the atmosphere with live performers.

In recent years, the concerts have really been growing in importance and thousands of fans flock here to see their favourite act. There have been some amazing acts announced who will be performing over the summer at Starlite and Puente Romano. Coming over to the Costa del Sol for a summer holiday and combining that with seeing your favourite artist is a great way to have an unforgettable getaway.

Here are some of the great people performing and when you can see them –

Starlite takes place in an old quarry in the Sierra Blanca area just above Marbella Town. For several years this music festival has been attracting some amazing acts and this year is no different. Here are the top international acts performing and the dates.

  • Anastacia 15th July
  • Art Garfunkel 16th July
  • Elton John, 20th July
  • Pretenders, 26th July
  • The Cranberries, 5th August
  • Andrea Bocelli, 15th August
  • Jason Derulo, 24th August

The Puente Romano concert series has been going for many years and holds intimate gigs in their tennis club, giving guests the chance to enjoy a great atmosphere and be close to all the actions and their favourite stars. Here are four great dates for the diary.

  • Foreigner, 11th June
  • Heather Small, Right Said Fred and Billy Ocean, 6th July
  • George Benson, 21st July
  • Michael Bolton, 10th August

These concerts are focussed around Marbella, so look for a quality holiday rental in this area to reduce travel and taxi fares.

To be close to all the action at Starlite, we’d recommend this stunning villa in Sierra Blanca  With four bedrooms, four bathrooms and impressive design, this property really has the wow factor. There are sensational views, lovely pool and garden, terraces, games room, gym and much more. This villa is perfect for a luxury holiday on the Costa del Sol and just a few minutes from Starlite, for maximum convenience.

Looking ahead to Easter on the Costa del Sol

We have just over a month before Easter is upon us, with Semana Santa or Holy Week starting on the 9th of April with Palm Sunday and then going through to Easter Sunday, or Resurrection Sunday, on the 16th of April.

Easter is a great time of year to take a short break, with several bank holidays so you won’t have to use so many precious holiday days. Good Friday is on April 14th and Easter Monday is on April 17th, both of these are bank holidays, so you can have a wonderful long weekend break. Have you decided where you’re going yet?

Why don’t you consider Spain? Semana Santa is a really important time of year for this catholic country, and rather than just have an Easter egg hunt and stuff yourself on chocolate, you can immerse yourself into the culture of catholic Spain by watching the amazing parades. They may look a little sinister with the Klu Klux Klan style headdresses, but there’s nothing to be afraid of, these parades are simply a way of telling the Easter story and worshipping. For the onlooker, they are full of pomp and ceremony and display the most wonderful statues on heavy floats depicting different scenes from the Easter story. These enormous “tronos” are carried through the streets by bands of devotees and followed by hundreds of worshippers and are really spectacular.

Some of the processions are joyous, but most are solemn and powerful. Many are held at night and lit by candles for added drama. As well as the hooded figures, you may also see women in black holding candles, these are known as the widows of Christ and are very striking.

If you want to experience the happy ones, check out Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, which are always great fun and are suitable for all the family. The most dramatic, sombre ones are on Thursday and Friday and are a must for anyone who wants to experience the power, emotion and devotion that these processions inspire.
