Costa del Sol means ‘Coast of the Sun’ and is the most southern region in Andalucia, Spain, boasting 150 km of beautiful Mediterranean coastline. Also known as the ‘Costa del Golf’ because of its 60 or more international-standard golf courses which attract world-famous tournaments, the Costa del Sol welcomes millions of people to its shores annually.
Formerly a community of small fishing ports and white-washed mountain villages, the region has been transformed during the past fifty years into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations - famed for its sunny climate, fabulous beaches and diverse culture - yet still maintaining its strong national heritage and historical roots.
Settlement in the region dates back to the Bronze Age, and has been ruled by many civilisations such as the Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors, all of which are apparent in the local architecture, especially in the Old Towns (‘Cascos Antiguos’) of ancient cities like Malaga, Seville, Cordoba and Granada, which make great day trips.
At its heart, its most celebrated and famous city, Marbella, provides the coast with its reputation for being a playground for wealthy celebrities. However, the Costa del Sol offers all visitors an opportunity for exciting nightlife, gourmet dining, and every imaginable relaxation, sport and pastime. What’s more, just by travelling inland a few minutes by car you are met with breath-taking landscapes of mountains, valleys, gorges and lakes, beautiful national parks, and a sense of timeless tranquility.
