Located in the province of Girona in Catalonia, the Costa Brava (‘Wild Coast’) is furthest northeast of the Spanish Costas, and borders France. Costa Brava boasts a marvellous coastline with golden beaches and sheltered coves, as well as a breathtaking backdrop of mountains and rocky gorges, lush vegetation, protected natural parks and wildlife reserves.
Holidays in the Costa Brava are best taken in the summer when the weather is warm and sunny with slightly cooler evenings. However, the winter is quite mild and offers plenty of opportunities for walks and sightseeing, as well as colourful festivals throughout the year, and of course the many restaurants, bars, cafés, museums and art galleries to visit. The area is also fast becoming a golfer's dream holiday with a string of international-standard golf courses now open in the region.
Whether you want sophisticated nightlife in a modern resort, clean and safe beaches for the children, the thrill of water sports such as parasailing, diving and surfing, or peaceful traditional villages with a sense of quiet relaxation, the Costa Brava is the perfect holiday escape.
Be sure to include a day trip to bustling Barcelona, reputed to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, and home to many works of the artist, Gaudi, including his amazing Sagrada Familia cathedral. Be sure to take a stroll down Las Ramblas, one of the most famous streets in Europe, a wide tree-lined pedestrian boulevard, with its hundreds of cafes, restaurants and shops.
Also worth a visit is Girona, the capital city of the province of Girona, which is a short drive from the Costa Brava costaline. Described by some as an underrated, stylish small city, it is full of historic and cultural beauty. Sightseeing treasures in Girona include many ancient churches, a monastery, a bishop’s palace and towering fortress walls, much of which are lit at night.
