Formerly known by its Roman name, Latium, the Lazio region is most famous for its capital city, Rome, which is also the capital of Italy. Located at the centre of the west coast of Italy, most of the inland region is ignored by tourists as they flock in droves to Rome - the Eternal City. However, it would be sad to miss the unspoiled countryside, the medieval hilltop towns, the tranquil lakes in old volcanic craters, and the warm welcome from the locals, which the interior has to offer. As Rome is the principal tourist destination, it provides a good base from which to do day-trips to the other sights in the region, such as the historic town of Viterbo to the north with its medieval centre, the inland spa resort of Fiuggi with its thermal springs, and the 100km of Latina coastline from Rome to Campania, which includes charming seaside resorts like Sperlonga, and stretches of sandy beaches. In Rome itself, enjoy the beautiful squares, with their fountains and statues, and don’t miss the archeological excavations and museums as well as favourites like the Colosseum, the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square.
