The string of lively and fashionable resorts - Riccione, Rimini, Cattolica, to name a few - on the Adriatic coastline of Emilia-Romagna, are famed for their sandy beaches and nightlife of chic riviera restaurants and trendy nightclubs that attract Italians and tourists alike. Places of interest inland include the world's smallest ancient Republic of San Marino (third smallest in the world) found in the Appenine mountains, and the town of Ravenna which is famous for its ceramic art. Rimini has an old town centre full of small squares (piazzas) and tiny streets lined with fashionable shops, bars and discos. Being one of the less expensive resorts on the Adriatic Coast, with lots of things to do and see, it is a good resort for family holidays or teenagers. By contrast, Riccione, known as the ‘green pearl of the Adriatic', is a more up-market, internationally-renowned resort which attracts famous celebrities as well as tourists to its sophisticated bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Cervia is known as an 'ancient city of salt', and its scenery includes green countryside and a wide expanse of sandy gold beach and pinewood forests, where you can enjoy golf, horse-riding, sightseeing in the old town, and the thermal baths.
